Who We Are: The Jesuit Tradition
Throughout its 122-year history, The University of Scranton has taught students from a Jesuit perspective based on ethics and social responsibility, which has shaped the University’s educational environment. Long before the global financial scandals involving international accounting firms made "ethics" a buzzword, The University of Scranton has adhered to its tradition as a Catholic and Jesuit university.

The University of Scranton is committed to the unique characteristics that give Jesuit graduates the foundation they need to succeed in their personal, public and professional lives: a maturing of faith, self-knowledge, respect for the dignity of others and themselves, a devotion to justice, a responsibility to serving the poor and a passion for truth, reflection, and lifelong learning.

Founded in 1888 as Saint Thomas College by the Most Reverend William G. O'Hara, D.D., the first bishop of Scranton, we achieved university status in 1938 and were entrusted to the care of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in 1942. The University of Scranton’s Jesuit tradition and history extends back nearly 500 years to the teachings, life and insights of Saint Ignatius Loyola (1491-1556).

The University of Scranton is a selective and highly-ranked university, one of just 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. As a comprehensive, coeducational institution, we promote a cooperative and supportive academic environment that focuses attention on educating the whole person. Superior Faculty and Curriculum
The excellence of our faculty and curriculum is confirmed by the highest designation awarded to a business school. The Kania School of Management is among a small number of institutions accredited by the AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). Only about 5-percent of educational institutions worldwide that offer business degrees have achieved this distinction. Our online MBA program is one of a few offered by accredited schools that is available completely online. Our online curriculum reflects the same rigorous academic standards as our on-campus programs, taught by the same highly-credentialed faculty. Whether you earn your degree at our campus in Scranton, or at our virtual campus, there is only one University of Scranton MBA.

The Panuska College of Professional Studies combines a liberal arts foundation with professional preparation. The curriculum of our Master of Science in Human Resources was developed and is regularly updated using the most current human resources body of knowledge as our guide. Faculty in this program combine years of practical work experience with outstanding academic preparation and research.
